Another Minority view of Occupy Wall Street

Extremely thought provoking article by Dream Hampton: http://www.thegrio.com/opinion/dream-hampton.php?page=2

Asking the question, even if the movement wasn’t orginally designed with us in mind, can’t we take advantage?

I find it profoundly distrubing that any time a minority asks Whites to acknowledge minority issues, they are accused of being divisive and when they don’t back down, “racist”. We don’t live in a post racial society and ignoring the role race plays in issues of poverty and marginalization is irresponsible and dangerous.

I made some comments about the Occupy Wall Street protests needing to be more inclusive of minority issues and recieved serious back lash. I stand by what I said. The list of grievances is indictive of who wrote it. Young, mostly White college graduates who have become involved in politics when the system caved in enough to squeeze even them. Students who were shocked to find their expensive education didn’t guarantee anything. Their outrage doesn’t seem to be that capitalism creates unfair advantages for some- it’s that isn’t them. Although the list wasn’t all inclusive, what was included seemed thrown together. The bit about equality seemed thrown in to look good. It was nabbed from our constitution and not fully fleshed out.

I initially supported the Occupy Wall Street protests but I don’t think I do now. I don’t see cohesion, I don’t see a strong message against capitalism or a desire to change the status quo. The request really seems to be “make it like it was when my parents were prospering” not “change the system”.

This is my son.
On his third birthday he was diagnosed with autism- his functioning placed at somewhere around 18 months.
Everything Changed.
Some time later I was diagnosed with lupus, which carries crippling symptoms like pain, fatigue, even organ failure.
Everything changed.
I was 12 credit hours from a degree in digital imaging when my whole life was changed. I will never be out from under debt for a degree I couldn’t finish even though I desperately want to.

Protesters are being kept inside the Plaza, and cannot come to the aid of those who have been arrrested.  They are asking the world to
“CALL NYPD Police at 1 Police Plaza.
CALL 1-888-692-7233
AND DEMAND THE LOCATION OF THE PRISONERS. MANY WHO WERE ARRESTED ARE INJURED, AND THEIR HANDCUFFS ARE TOO TIGHT, AND THEIR HANDS ARE TURNING BLUE.. THEY WERE LAST SEEN LOCKED IN A VAN OUTSIDE THE 1ST PRECINCT, BUT THEY’VE BEEN MOVED.”
