The Africana collection up close

Africana- n. (used with a pl. verb) Materials, such as books, documents, or art objects, relating to the history or culture of African peoples. (www.thefreedictionary.com)

I created this collection based on descriptions I’d read about African jewelry, before the introduction of European glass beads. I loved the idea of women and men in ropes and ropes of wood beads and made my own interpretation. My favorite without a doubt it is the Nzinga necklace series. Each one is unique but they all add a look of complete…regality. That isn’t a word. I had to make it up because that’s how serious this necklace is- it  NEEDS it’s own word.

I talked about my influences before, when I first introduced the Nzinga bracelets Since then, I’ve continued to add to the Africana collection, it is still my favorite.

“This is good a place to fall as any, we’ll build our altar here. Make me your Maria, I’m already on my knees.
You had Jesus on your breath and I caught him in mine. Sweating out confessions, the undone and the divine…this is his body, this is his love…”

“The black woman is demanding a new set of female definitions and a recognition of herself of a citizen, companion and confidant, not a matriarchal villian or a step stool baby-maker.”- Linda LaRue

My Blackness and my Womanhood are inseparable.
Too often when dealing with issues that affect women, I encounter racism or a willful ignorance to the issues facing me as a minority.
When fighting racism, my community encourages me to stand behind and uphold my men even when they do not support or protect me or my rights as a woman.
I demand recognition and equality for everything that I am: Black and female.
I am Black feminism.

Ok, despite getting some ignorant comments about my hair (off Tumblr) I’ve decided to post pictures anyway. I cut my hair and I have layers and bangs- I like it. It feels healthier and verrrrrrrry soft. I hope the Mr. likes it too.

The Solange earrings

Anyone who knows me had to know this was coming! I had to name these silk thread earrings after her because they remind me of the first picture I saw of Solange where she wowed me. Although I was a fan of the “…Hadley Street” album I never thought of Solange as a fashionista. Then one day she stepped out in the most gorgeous little Kente dress and I started paying attention. She is daring, care free and always true to her own aesthetic. I don’t always love what she wears but I LOVE that she dares to wear it.

I tip my hat to her.

Hopefully her namesake is as deserving of the name as I think it is.

How do you feel about it?
